I am an Angolan multidisciplinary artist currently based in Cape Town. I was born in Luanda, Angola in 1999, 3 years before the end of the civil war. I grew up as Angola healed from the collective trauma brought by the war and was raised by a single mother within a nationalistic family. I am part of the first generation to grow up in a peaceful Angola. Stories of the war built my societal memory in the course of my childhood, as my country was still healing from embedded collective trauma.
Part of my practice stems from the constant clash of my nationalistic background and inherited trauma with being an individual influenced by Hollywood, the internet and pop culture, and with apparent no escape route from Global pressures. The value of locality is a key aspect of my practice. My work is interested in dismantling and understanding trauma in first person, even if sometimes alien to my lived experience.
